What Is an HP LaserJet Service PIN?

An HP LaserJet service PIN—also called a service access code, service mode PIN, or technician PIN—is a numeric code used to enter the printer’s advanced service menu.

Depending on the printer model and firmware, the service menu may provide access to:

• Printer event logs

• Page and engine cycle counts

• Paper-path and sensor diagnostics

• Component tests

• Scanner or document-feeder adjustments

• Calibration settings

• Maintenance-kit, fuser, transfer-kit, or document-feeder counters

• Service identification information

Available options vary by printer model and firmware version.

Important Safety Information

Service menus are intended for qualified technicians, equipment owners, and authorized IT administrators.

Before using a service PIN:

• Confirm the exact printer model.

• Record or photograph existing values before changing them.

• Reset a maintenance counter only after the corresponding component has been replaced.

• Do not change serial numbers, cycle counts, calibration values, or factory settings unless the applicable service documentation instructs you to do so.

• Do not use Format Disk, Clean Disk, Partial Clean, or similar preboot functions unless you fully understand the result. Certain operations can erase settings, stored data, firmware, or third-party applications.

• Use these codes only on equipment you own or are authorized to administer.

How to Enter the HP FutureSmart Service Menu

Menu names vary by model and firmware, but many HP LaserJet Enterprise and Managed printers use the following process:

1. Open Support Tools, Device Maintenance, or the equivalent menu from the printer’s Home screen.

2. Select Service.

3. On the sign-in screen, confirm that Service Access Code is selected.

4. Enter the service PIN for your printer model.

5. Select Sign In or OK.

If the factory-default PIN does not work, the printer administrator may have replaced it with a custom service access code.

A service PIN is not necessarily the same as an Embedded Web Server administrator PIN, Wi-Fi PIN, Wi-Fi Direct password, stored-job PIN, or printer-claim code.

What If the HP Service PIN Does Not Work?

First, confirm that you selected Service Access Code rather than an administrator or user access option.

Also verify that:

• You have the exact printer model and series.

• All leading zeroes were entered.

• The code has not been replaced by the printer administrator.

• Your printer uses the standard service menu rather than a secondary service menu or Tech Mode sequence.

• Your model is an Enterprise or Managed device that supports a service access code.

• The code is not being entered into the Embedded Web Server administrator-password screen.

On supported HP FutureSmart printers, an administrator can replace the factory service PIN with a custom eight-digit code. If this has occurred, the factory code listed above will no longer provide access.

Is the Service PIN the Same as the Printer PIN?

Not necessarily.

A service PIN opens technician-level service menus. A printer PIN may instead refer to:

• An Embedded Web Server administrator PIN

• A Wi-Fi Direct password

• A stored-print-job PIN

• A printer-claim code

• A custom administrator password

Many HP LaserJet Pro printers use a factory PIN printed on a label inside the toner-cartridge access area. That code is generally used for printer administration and is different from the service access codes listed on this page.

Can I Reset the Fuser or Maintenance-Kit Counter?

Only if your printer’s service menu provides the applicable reset option.

Do not reset a fuser, maintenance-kit, transfer-kit, imaging-drum, or document-feeder counter unless the corresponding component has actually been replaced. Resetting a counter without replacing the component can hide maintenance conditions and make future troubleshooting more difficult.

Does Every HP LaserJet Have a Service PIN?

No. Some HP LaserJet models use:

• A service access PIN

• A secondary service menu

• A specific control-panel key sequence

• A Tech Mode sequence

• A factory PIN printed inside the printer

• No customer-accessible service menu

Always use service documentation written for the exact printer model.
