Modern HP and Canon laser toner cartridges use an electronic memory chip to communicate cartridge identification, supply information, authentication data and other cartridge status information to the printer.

A damaged, corrupted, outdated or non-communicating toner chip may cause the printer to reject an otherwise functional cartridge. This replacement chip is designed for compatible CF258X / 58X and Canon 057H cartridge applications and can be used when rebuilding a cartridge or diagnosing a suspected chip-related supply problem.

May assist with chip-related supply errors.

When the printer cannot properly communicate with or authenticate the toner cartridge, replacing the cartridge chip can help determine whether the existing chip is responsible for the reported error. Other cartridge, contact, formatter, firmware or printer hardware issues can produce similar symptoms, so replacement of the chip should not be considered a guaranteed repair for every supply-related fault.

The chip installs directly onto the compatible toner cartridge in place of the existing memory chip. Installation requires access to the chip mounting location on the cartridge and should be performed carefully to avoid damaging the chip, cartridge housing or electrical contacts.

Before replacing a chip for diagnostic purposes, inspect the printer's cartridge contacts and the existing chip for contamination, physical damage or improper seating. A replacement chip cannot correct mechanical toner cartridge defects or unrelated printer hardware failures.
