A cartridge chip provides information the printer uses to identify the supply and report its status. Replacing a faulty or incompatible chip can help restore communication between an otherwise compatible toner cartridge and the printer.
Refresh cartridge status.
Designed to reset the chip-based cartridge information used on the Supplies Status page when correctly installed on the matching cartridge. A status reset does not refill toner or restore worn cartridge components.
Address recognition errors.
Intended to resolve “Incompatible supply,” “10.XX.XX Supply memory error,” and other toner-cartridge recognition or communication messages when the underlying cause is the cartridge chip.

For HP 89A cartridges
Select this chip when your existing cartridge is labeled CF289A. HP’s original 89A cartridge has a nominal yield of approximately 5,000 pages.
High-yield version
CF289X
For HP 89X cartridges
Select this chip when your existing cartridge is labeled CF289X. HP’s original 89X cartridge has a nominal yield of approximately 10,000 pages.
Page yields identify the original cartridge classes, not a guaranteed output from this replacement chip. Actual available pages depend on toner quantity, cartridge condition, page coverage and usage. Installing a CF289X chip does not convert a standard-yield cartridge into a high-yield cartridge.

A replacement chip does not correct an incompatible cartridge body, depleted toner, worn imaging components, damaged printer contacts or other hardware failures. It is not advertised as a bypass for cartridge-protection or administrator supply policies. CF289Y / HP 89Y is not a selectable variant in this listing.
A few checks before installation.
- Confirm your printer model and the CF289A or CF289X number on the cartridge.
- Power off the printer and remove the cartridge according to the printer’s instructions.
- Replace the chip using the procedure appropriate to your cartridge housing, preserving the correct orientation and avoiding damage to the contacts.
- Reinstall the cartridge, power on the printer and check cartridge recognition and the Supplies Status page.
- If an error persists, record its exact code and check chip seating, contact condition and cartridge compatibility.
